In the summer of 1942, 21 year-old Anne Calloway, newly engaged, sets off to serve in the Army Nurse Corps on the Pacific island of Bora Bora. More exhilarated by the adventure of a lifetime than she ever was by her predictable fiance, she is drawn to a mysterious soldier named Westry, and their friendship soon blossoms into hues as deep as the hibiscus flowers native to the island. Under the thatched roof of an abandoned beach bungalow, the two share a private world--until they witness a gruesome crime, Westry is suddenly redeployed, and the idyll vanishes into the winds of war.A timeless story of enduring passion, The Bungalow chronicles Anne's determination to discover the truth about the twin losses--of life, and of love--that have haunted her for 70 years. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Gin Hammond. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/live/000451/bk_live_000451_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

A Lambda Literary Award Finalist, 2020. A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice. Named a Most Anticipated Book of Fall by The New York Times, Real Simple, Electric Literature, and more. "Cinematic . . . The spaces she creates for her characters . . . have the aura of realms." -The New York Times Book Review A lonely newlywed and her wayward brother-in-law follow divergent and dangerous paths through the postwar American West. Muriel is newly married and restless, transplanted from her rural Kansas hometown to life in a dusty bungalow in San Diego. The air is rich with the tang of salt and citrus, but the limits of her new life seem to be closing in: She misses her freethinking mother, dead before Muriel's nineteenth birthday, and her sly, itinerant brother-in-law, Julius, who made the world feel bigger than she had imagined. And so she begins slipping off to the Del Mar racetrack to bet and eavesdrop, learning the language of horses and risk. Meanwhile, Julius is testing his fate in Las Vegas, working at a local casino where tourists watch atomic tests from the roof, and falling in love with Henry, a young card cheat. When Henry is eventually discovered and run out of town, Julius takes off to search for him in the plazas and dives of Tijuana, trading one city of dangerous illusions and indiscretions for another. On Swift Horses is a debut of astonishing power: a story of love and luck, of two people trying to find their place in a country that is coming apart even as it promises them everything.

Aus dem Inhalt: Studhorse in Winthrop, WA, USA (Olson Kundig) SJZ House in Londrina, Brasilien (ZIZ Arquitectura) Penthouse Chalet in Klosters, Schweiz (Go Interiors) Folded Roof House in Fukuoka, Japan (NKS architects) The Cube Building in London, Grossbritannien (HawkinsBrown Architects)

Fantasy Short Stories: Boris Superhalk

Boris Superhalk The best of Fantasy Short Stories In a modest bungalow on the edge of a forest, lived a rather poor moose who went by the name of Boris Superhalk. The small bungalow he called home was not filled with odd bits and pieces as one might expect of a moose with such a name, nor was it a stylish bungalow where important people came to meet. It was a simple bungalow with a large veranda in front where Boris regularly spent his afternoons relaxing, listening to the relaxing sounds of the forest which surrounded him. It was nothing fancy, but Boris Superhalk did not need anything fancy, he just needed somewhere he could call home. A place with a kitchen for him to cook amazing meals day after day, a warm bed to sleep in at night and a roof over his head for those rainy days. Boris really couldn't ask for much more. He absolutely loved living his peaceful life in his little bungalow. Life had not always been so simple and easy going for him, but he had turned that around! He now lived off the land, he had a garden in his back yard and he ate a plethora of veggies he grew himself. There was no need to be bothered by anyone, ever again. Especially not those godforsaken gremlins! At one point, Boris thought they would never leave him be. They always needed something and for some reason, he was always their go-to moose. Boris had finally had enough after the last excursion that he took with the gremlins. They were always getting him into some crazy, near death type of experience! He just couldn't take it anymore, he was no longer the young moose he had once been. When Boris had been a young moose, fresh out of the academy, he had been up for any adventure, ready to take on any task presented to him, but now in his later years, he only wanted to live the simple life a moose was meant to live. He no longer really craved adventure, he was happy to just cook up a storm in his kitchen and then eat his spoils while sitting on his welcoming veranda. The sounds of the forest were suddenly drowned out by the sound of a very familiar, shrill voice, 'Boris! Boris Superhalk!' it called out and Boris knew who it was before she even walked around the bungalow. the adventure has began..
